What a dry sauna is

A dry sauna heats a wooden room with dry heat rather than filling it with steam. There are two kinds. A traditional dry sauna uses an electric heater or wood stove to heat rocks and the air; you can ladle a little water on the rocks for a burst of steam, but the room stays far drier than a steam room. An infrared sauna uses heater panels and runs at lower air temperatures. Steam rooms and portable steam saunas are the wet alternative.

Dry sauna vs wet sauna

A dry sauna gives hot, low-humidity air; a steam room or wet sauna keeps humidity near saturation at a lower temperature. Our dry vs wet sauna guide and sauna vs steam room explain the differences.

Choosing a dry sauna

  • Heat: traditional for high heat and löyly, infrared for gentler heat and often lower power needs.
  • Seats: shop 1-person, 2-person, 3-person and 6-person and larger.
  • Wood: hemlock is the most common here, then red cedar. See our sauna wood guide.
  • Power: check the voltage and amps on every listing and confirm your circuit with an electrician.

Dry Saunas FAQ

What is a dry sauna?
A dry sauna heats a wooden room with dry heat from an electric heater, wood stove or infrared panels, instead of filling it with steam.
Is an infrared sauna a dry sauna?
Yes. Infrared saunas heat with panels and keep the air dry, so they are a type of dry sauna.
How much does a dry sauna cost?
Dry saunas here start at $599.95 for a portable infrared unit; most indoor infrared rooms cost $1,000 to $5,000 and outdoor saunas cost more.
Can I add steam to a dry sauna?
In a traditional sauna you can ladle water onto the hot rocks for a short burst of steam. Infrared saunas have no rocks, so they stay dry.
