Gifts for someone with a sauna at home
Home sauna owners use their gear every session, so practical gifts land well.
Bucket and ladle
A 5 L (about 1.3 gal) black aluminum bucket with a bamboo-handled ladle, $79.99. A bigger bucket means fewer trips to refill between rounds of löyly.
Sauna timer and thermometer
A 15-minute wooden sand timer ($64.98) has marks at 5 and 10 minutes and mounts on the wall with a hidden strip. The dial thermometer-hygrometer ($49.99) reads 70 to 250°F (20 to 120°C) and 0 to 100% humidity, with no batteries. Together they are $114.97, or pick one from sauna timers and thermometers.
Backrests and headrests
Canadian hemlock backrests in round stick, S-shape and wide flat grid styles run $46.24 to $76.95, and a red cedar headrest is $74.95. Check the size against their bench first.
For tent and wood-fired saunas
Heat-resistant leather gloves ($24.99) are for handling a hot stove, stones and firewood.
Gifts for the regular sauna-goer
A sauna hat
The classic sauna gift. Finnmark Sauna recommends a hat to protect your head and hair from the intense heat, traditionally made of felt or wool. Our sauna hats include a 100% Australian wool felt hat that covers the ears ($49.99), a polyester mesh hat that folds small for a gym bag ($39.99), and colorful wool felt caps from $12.99. Choose wool for a hot Finnish sauna and mesh for the gym or an infrared room.
Scents for the löyly water
Eucalyptus, peppermint and a Sauna in Nature blend come in 0.5 fl oz (15 ml) bottles at $14.99 each. The listings say to mix 3 to 4 drops into at least 100 ml of water and never put oil directly on the stones. Sauna Ice ($18.95) is menthol crystals you dissolve in the bucket; the listing says a bag lasts about 140 sessions. See all of them in sauna scents, oils and skin care.
A venik
A venik (the Finnish word is vihta) is a bundle of leafy branches used to whisk the skin in the sauna. The finland.fi guide describes the birch vihta as an optional part of the Finnish sauna. Ours come in birch, oak and eucalyptus at $25 each. Soak one in warm water for about 30 minutes before use, per the listing.
Gifts for after the sauna
- A robe. Ten styles for women, men and kids, $28.99 to $59.99. Waffle robes in 60/40 cotton-poly are light and dry fast. Plush microfiber robes are warmer for winter and outdoor saunas. See sauna robes.
- A big cotton towel. 100% cotton, four sizes up to 100 × 200 cm (about 39 × 79 in), $23.46 to $43.20.
- A sauna hoodie. Cotton-poly fleece with a cotton face, $59.99, in several colors and slogans.
Gifts for readers and builders
A book works whether or not they have a sauna. A few picks from our 17 sauna books:
| For | Book | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Planning a build | Sauna Construction Handbook (Wojciech Kumik, 136 pages) | $39.15 |
| Design lovers | The Secrets of Finnish Sauna Design (Lassi Liikkanen, 216 pages) | $63.29 to $84.89 |

Bath and body gifts
For someone who likes a long wash after the sauna:
- Sauna soap. A handmade bar scented with eucalyptus and citrus, with mustard powder, $6.95 (3 oz) or $12.95 (6 oz). In Finland, the finland.fi guide notes, the wash with soap usually comes at the end of the sauna.
- Bath brush. About 14 in (36 cm), oiled beech wood with horsehair and plant-fiber bristles, for dry brushing. $23.99.
- Face masks. A green-mud clay mask and a self-warming salt mask, each in 90 g or 150 g, $36.82 to $52.54. Both are wash-off masks; follow the maker's directions.

| New sauna owner | Bucket and ladle, thermometer-hygrometer | $129.98 |
Before you buy
- Know their sauna type. Oils and menthol crystals go into water for the stones of a traditional sauna. Infrared saunas have no stones. Hats, robes, towels and books suit everyone.
- Check sizes. Robes and hoodies have size charts on each listing.
- Order with time to spare. Most orders ship within 1–4 business days, and transit time varies by product.
