Why use a sauna mat
A sauna mat is a pad you sit or lie on in the hot room. It keeps bare skin off hot bench boards, soaks up sweat so the wood stays cleaner, and gives each person their own clean spot on a shared bench. In Finland and at many public saunas, sitting on a towel or seat cover is standard etiquette. Read our sauna etiquette guide for more.

Seat mat or bench mat?
A seat mat is sized for one person to sit on and is easy to carry to a public sauna or gym. A bench mat is long enough to cover most of a bench seat, so it suits a home sauna where you want to stretch out.
Why felt
Felt and wool are the classic sauna materials, the same as a sauna hat. They absorb moisture and do not get as hot to the touch as bare wood. Rinse and air-dry your mat after each session, and wash it by hand to keep felt from shrinking.
