Barrel Sauna vs Cabin Sauna

Barrel Sauna vs Cabin Sauna (2026): Which Outdoor Sauna Fits You?

A barrel sauna is a round tube of wooden staves held together by bands. It encloses less air than a square cabin of the same width, height and length, so it has less air to heat, and it is usually the cheaper way to get a 4-6 person outdoor sauna. A cabin (square) sauna has straight walls, a flat ceiling and a separate roof. That gives you more usable headroom, more flexible bench layouts and more design choice, at a wider range of prices.

In our current range, outdoor barrel saunas start from $6,999.00, and outdoor traditional cabins start at $4,199.95. Below we compare heat-up and air volume, headroom, benches, build, roof and snow, foundations and price.

Heat-up and air volume

A traditional sauna heats the air and a bed of stones. Cleveland Clinic puts traditional sauna temperatures at 150 to 195°F (66 to 91°C). The less air there is to heat, the less work the heater has to do.

The geometry is simple. A circle fills about 78.5% of the square it fits inside, so a barrel holds roughly 21% less air than a box with the same width, height and length. The sauna maker LeisureCraft makes the same point: a barrel's curved profile means less interior air to heat than a square shape of the same footprint, so it warms up fastest of the shapes it builds.

In real terms, the 180 cm Blisspod Prague lists an interior of 67.87 x 67.87 x 67.87 in (172.4 cm each way). As a cylinder, that is about 142 cu ft (4.0 m³) before you subtract benches. A box of the same size would be about 181 cu ft (5.1 m³).

Shape isn't the only factor. Glass matters too. Harvia's heater manual says each square meter of uninsulated surface such as glass adds 1.2 m³ to the volume you should size the heater for. Both barrels in our range with large glass areas, the Blisspod Prague (full glass back) and the Mr. Steam Barrel Haus (full-front glass), give up some of the barrel's efficiency for the view. Check sizing with our sauna heater size calculator or what size sauna heater guide.

Headroom

A barrel is tallest down its center line and curves down toward the benches. A cabin's ceiling is flat, so the height is the same over every seat. Harvia's installation manual gives a normal sauna ceiling height of 2100-2300 mm (82.7-90.6 in), with a minimum of 1900 mm (74.8 in). It also recommends no more than 1100-1200 mm (43.3-47.2 in) between the bench and the ceiling, because heat rises.

Compact outdoor saunas often run lower than that. The 180 cm Blisspod Prague barrel lists a 67.87 in (172.4 cm) interior diameter. The 6 kW Cedar Traditional Outdoor Sauna and the 3-4 Person Fir and Red Cedar Outdoor Sauna Room both list 69.3 in (176 cm) interior heights. If you are tall, compare the interior height on the listing, and remember that in a barrel the height over the bench is lower than at the center.

Bench space

In a barrel, benches span the curved width, so the diameter limits their length. The Blisspod Prague's bench is 63.94 in (162.4 cm) long in a 67.87 in (172.4 cm) interior. Adding people means adding length: the Prague comes in 180 cm (up to 4 people) and 240 cm (up to 6 people) versions. LeisureCraft lists 20-inch-wide benches on its barrels.

Straight walls give cabins more options. LeisureCraft notes that cabin benches can run in L-shaped or full-wall layouts that a curved interior can't hold. In our range, the 6 kW Cedar Traditional Outdoor Sauna has two benches, 55.1 in (140 cm) and 33.1 in (84 cm) long. The 3-4 Person Fir and Red Cedar room has a 42.5 in (108 cm) bench.

Build and materials

Barrels are built from long curved staves held together by bands. LeisureCraft uses marine-grade aluminum bands. Our barrel listings recommend checking the bands and seams each season. They arrive as kits, and the long staves need a clear delivery route. The 180 cm Blisspod Prague weighs 970 lb (440 kg) and ships in a 74.8 x 74.8 x 63.62 in box of about 1,014 lb.

Cabins use flat wall panels and a separate roof, which opens up more materials and styles. In our range you'll find ThermoWood in the Mande MW12, MW16 and MW20, carbonized spruce in the Finnish-Style Carbonized Spruce Outdoor Sauna, thermal spruce in the Mr. Steam Cubist, and cedar in the Golden Designs Savonlinna. Our sauna wood guide compares them.

Roof and snow

A barrel's curved shell is its roof, and LeisureCraft notes that the rounded profile sheds wind. Cabins vary:

  • The Golden Designs Savonlinna lists a roof overhang of about 4 in (10.2 cm) around the top.
  • The Golden Designs Gargellen has a flat roof.
  • The Mande listings mention keeping gutters, roof edges and the base clear, and brushing off leaves and snow.
  • LeisureCraft's own cabin line uses cedar shingles over an EPDM rubber membrane.

Whichever shape you choose in a snowy area, keep the roof and the base clear and check local permit and setback rules for outdoor structures. Several of our cabin listings remind buyers to do this.

Foundation

Both shapes need a flat, level, well-drained base. Our Golden Designs Klosters barrel listing suggests a concrete pad, pavers or a solid deck. The Mande MW16 listing suggests a concrete pad or compacted gravel. For a cabin with a roof overhang, size the base for the footprint plus the overhang, as the Golden Designs listings note. Plan the electrical run at the same time: a traditional heater is hardwired on a dedicated circuit.

Heaters and power

  • Blisspod Prague (barrel): 6000W heater. One listing gives 240V/27A, the other 220V/27A. The control range is 32 to 194°F (0 to 90°C).
  • 6 kW Cedar Traditional Outdoor Sauna (cabin): 6000W heater.
  • Golden Designs Savonlinna (cabin): Harvia 8 kW stove on a dedicated 240V/40A circuit, plus a 120V/15A circuit for lights, audio and controls.
  • Mande MW20 (cabin): standard configuration, Harvia Kip 8.0 kW electric, or a Harvia M3 wood-burner with a full chimney set.

Which should you choose?

Choose a barrel sauna if

  • You want seating for four to six at the lowest price.
  • You like the classic Nordic barrel look and a compact air volume to heat.
  • You are comfortable assembling a stave-and-band kit and checking the bands each season.

Choose a cabin sauna if

  • You want even headroom over every seat and flexible bench layouts.
  • You want a specific material (thermowood, cedar, carbonized spruce) or a modern architectural design.
  • You want options such as a wood-burning stove (Mande MW20) or a hybrid stove plus infrared (Golden Designs Gargellen).

A note on health

Traditional saunas run hot. Harvard Health advises avoiding alcohol before and after sauna use, and says people with uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart disease should check with their doctor first. Talk to your doctor before using a sauna if you have a heart condition or are pregnant.

FAQ

Do barrel saunas heat faster than cabin saunas?

For the same outer dimensions, a barrel holds about 21% less air, and LeisureCraft says its barrels warm up fastest of its shapes. Heater size, insulation and glass area matter too.

Is a barrel sauna cheaper than a cabin sauna?

For six people, usually yes in our range: barrels seat six from $6,999.00. The cheapest outdoor traditional cabin we carry is $4,199.95, but its seating isn't listed.

Which has more headroom?

A cabin's flat ceiling gives the same height over every seat. In a barrel, height is greatest at the center and lower over the benches.

Do barrel saunas need a foundation?

Yes. Both shapes need a flat, level, well-drained base, such as a concrete pad, pavers, a solid deck or compacted gravel, depending on the listing.

Are barrel saunas good in snow?

The curved shell has no flat roof. Whichever shape you choose, keep the roof and the base clear of snow and standing water, and check local building rules.

What heater does a barrel sauna need?

Our Blisspod Prague barrels come with a 6000W heater. Size heaters by room volume, adding extra for glass. Use our heater size calculator.
