Choosing a sauna bucket and ladle
The bucket holds the water and the ladle pours it onto the hot stones to make löyly, the burst of steam that makes a Finnish sauna.
Wood or aluminum
- Wooden buckets are traditional and look right in a cedar or hemlock room. Many have a plastic liner. Keep unlined wood buckets partly filled so the staves stay swollen and watertight.
- Aluminum buckets are light, durable and do not dry out or crack. Aluminum ladles usually have a wooden handle.
Size and ladle length
- A 4 to 5 litre bucket holds enough water for a session.
- A long-handled ladle keeps your hand away from the heater and the rising steam.
Sets
Accessory sets combine a bucket and ladle with a thermometer, hygrometer or sand timer, which makes a good gift.
Add a few drops of sauna essential oil to the water, never straight onto the stones, and see sauna stones.
Sauna Buckets & Ladles FAQ
What size sauna bucket do I need?
A 4 to 5 litre bucket suits most home saunas and holds enough water for a session.
Wooden or aluminum sauna bucket?
Wood is traditional and suits a wooden sauna room. Aluminum is lighter, does not dry out or crack, and needs less care.
Can I put essential oil in the sauna bucket?
Use oils made for saunas. Add a few drops to the water in the bucket and never pour oil straight onto the stones or heater.
