Sauna scents and aromatherapy
In a traditional sauna, scent goes into the water, not onto the stones. You add a few drops to the bucket, then ladle the scented water onto the hot stones as löyly (steam). The oil listings here are clear about it: never put oil directly on sauna stones.
| Scent | Size | How to use (per listing) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eucalyptus essential oil | 0.5 fl oz (15 ml) | 3–4 drops per at least 100 ml (about 3.4 fl oz) of water | $14.99 |
| Peppermint essential oil | 0.5 fl oz (15 ml) | 3–4 drops per at least 100 ml of water | $14.99 |
| Sauna in Nature essential oil blend | 0.5 fl oz (15 ml) | 3–4 drops per at least 100 ml of water | $14.99 |
| Arctic berries sauna and bath blend | 0.34 fl oz (10 ml) | For sauna steam or the bath | $12.60 |
| Sauna Ice menthol crystals | One bag | 3–5 small crystals dissolved in a bucket of warm water | $18.95 |
Essential oils
The three 15 ml oils are listed as 100% natural essential oils. The three scents are eucalyptus, peppermint and a blend called Sauna in Nature. The arctic berries blend is a smaller 10 ml bottle with a fruity scent for sauna steam or a bath.
Menthol crystals
Sauna Ice is natural menthol crystals. Drop 3 to 5 small crystals into warm water, let them dissolve, then throw the water on the stones. The listing says one bag lasts about 140 sessions, depending on dosage. It also says not to store the bag in the sauna, where it will melt, to avoid touching your eyes after handling the crystals, and to check with a physician first if you are allergic to menthol or pregnant.
Scents in an infrared or shared sauna
Infrared saunas have no stones, so there is nowhere to pour scented water. Do not put oils on infrared panels. In a shared sauna, ask before you scent the water, the same way you would ask before throwing löyly. Our sauna etiquette guide covers the rest.
Soap, brush and face masks

Where they fit in a sauna session
Shower before you go in. In Finland, finland.fi notes, washing with soap and shampoo usually comes near the end of the sauna, so the soap belongs to your final rinse. The bath brush is for dry brushing; its listing suggests a "brush bath" in the morning. The two masks are wash-off treatments. Follow each maker's directions: the green-mud mask stays on for 10 to 15 minutes, and the salt mask goes on a clean, dry face and is massaged in, then rinsed with lukewarm water. Both listings suggest use once or twice a week. We list ingredients and directions as each maker gives them, and we do not make claims about what any product does for your skin. Check the ingredient list if you have sensitivities.
