Infrared cedar cabins

The six red cedar infrared cabins range from a one-person room at $2,405 (120V, 15-amp plug, 1,450 W, 8 heater panels, 25 to 65°C) to a two- to three-person pentagonal cabin at $4,099. One is built for outdoor use with a red cedar and hemlock shell. Healthline puts typical infrared sauna temperatures at 120 to 140°F (49 to 60°C).

Traditional cedar saunas

The traditional models heat the air with an electric stove and stones, so you can throw water for steam. The Golden Designs models list 8 kW stoves where specified, with stated ranges of about 170 to 185°F and maximums of 190 to 195°F. The wiring is the big step up. The Kuusamo, Savonlinna and Drammen listings call for a 240V, 40-amp dedicated circuit for the stove, plus a 120V, 15-amp circuit for lights and controls. The Blisspod Prague barrels list a 6,000 W heater at 220V and 27 amps. Plan on a licensed electrician. Use our sauna heater size calculator to check stove size against room volume.

Outdoor and barrel

The two Blisspod Prague barrels come in 180 x 180 x 180 cm (about 5.9 ft) for up to 4 people or a 240 cm (7.9 ft) length for up to 6. They have shingled roofs and a full glass back. The Golden Designs Kaskinen is a six-person hybrid at $18,999, with an exterior of 69 x 84 x 95 in. For more outdoor choices, see outdoor saunas.

Cedar or hemlock?

Hemlock is lighter, milder-smelling and generally cheaper here. The median hemlock sauna is about $2,961, against about $6,999 for cedar. If scent and a classic look matter most, choose cedar. Compare in hemlock saunas or browse indoor saunas.
