How to choose a home sauna
Start with three questions: how many people will use it, where it will go, and what power you have nearby. Those answers narrow the choice faster than anything else. Below is how the saunas in this collection break down.
| Type | Listings | Price range | Typical power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infrared saunas | 91 | $993 to $18,999 | Mostly 120V, about 1,000 to 3,200 watts |
| Indoor saunas | 32 | $993 to $20,580 | 120V carbon-panel rooms up to 240V stove rooms |
| Outdoor saunas | 28 | $1,378 to $75,028 | Mostly 6 to 10.5 kW electric stoves |
| Tent saunas | 29 | $270 to $9,000 | Wood-fired stove, no wiring |
| Portable saunas | 71 | $15 to $729 | Household outlet |
Infrared or traditional?
An infrared sauna uses heater panels that warm you directly. A traditional Finnish sauna heats the air with a stove and stones, and you throw water on the stones for löyly (steam). Healthline puts typical infrared sauna temperatures at 120 to 140°F (49 to 60°C) and traditional saunas at 150 to 180°F (66 to 82°C). If you want steam and high heat, go traditional. If you want a lower, steady heat that often runs off a standard circuit, look at infrared saunas.
Indoor or outdoor?
Indoor saunas fit a basement, garage, bathroom or spare room. Many one- and two-person infrared rooms are under 4 ft (1.2 m) wide. Outdoor saunas need a level base and a roof built for weather. Cabins, barrels and glass-front models in this range use thermally modified wood, red cedar, spruce and aspen.
Power and wiring
Check the electrical spec before you buy. Many infrared saunas here list 120V at 15 or 20 amps. Some of those still call for a dedicated circuit. Traditional electric stoves are a different class: several outdoor listings call for 240V on a dedicated 40-amp circuit. Wood-fired tent saunas need no wiring at all, just a stove, chimney and dry firewood.
Size and capacity
Listings run from single-person cabins to tents and outdoor rooms that seat 6 to 8. Match the bench length to how you actually sit or lie down. Then check the outside dimensions against your space, including door swing and any roof overhang.
Budget and portable options
If you are not ready for a cabin, portable saunas start at $65 for a steam tent with a small steam generator. Infrared sauna blankets run $152 to $729. They store in a closet and plug into a household outlet.
Shipping and setup
Most orders ship within 1 to 4 business days. Transit time varies by product, and large saunas ship freight. Return policies and other terms come from each brand and are shown on the product page. Questions about a specific model? Contact us before you order.
