Sauna accessories worth having

A few basic tools make every session better. Here is what is in this collection, grouped by use.

Making löyly (steam)

  • Bucket and ladle: a 5 L (about 1.3 gal) aluminum bucket with a bamboo-handled ladle, $80.
  • Sauna stones: 35 to 38 lb bags of olivine gabbro, $80 to $100.
  • Scents: eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils and a blend ($15 each). Sauna Ice menthol crystals ($19) dissolve in the bucket water. The listing says one bag lasts about 140 sessions.
  • Whisks: oak, birch and eucalyptus veniks, $25 each.

Measuring

A dial thermometer and hygrometer ($50) reads 70 to 250°F (20 to 120°C) and 0 to 100% humidity, with no batteries. It is the simplest way to see what your heater is actually doing.

The folding bench frame gives a bench height of about 25 in with a footrest at about 10 in. That suits tent saunas, where sitting higher puts you in hotter air.

Safety and handling

Heat-resistant leather gloves ($25) are for handling hot stoves, stones and firewood. A firewood carrying bag is $40. Small and large smokeless fire pits ($99 and $149) are for cooling down outside. The large one stands 13 in tall and 18 in wide.
